I decided to make this Wednesday post a fun one. The hubs gets in tonight at midnight and I want to start celebrating early.
Punctuation Update: I am now reading Eats Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss (It's a really fun book, I'll tell you about it later.)
Last year I won 2 Miranda Dickinson Books from Kath Eastman's blog. I also won her a copy of her cd, because yes she is a talented singer as well. The funny thing is I have to play it every day because grabby toddler likes to dance to it. The first time I played it, he was ill but he still got up to dance. Every day he adds a new routine to his dance, so we are pretty much a Miranda Dickinson dancing family now.
Now let's talk about The Proposal. It is not a new movie, but it's one every romantic writer should watch. If nothing else it's got La Reynolds being vulnerable *le sigh*. It is also about an editor (Sandra Bullock), and that is my excuse for having watched it more than 20 times till date. It's got great romance, chemistry and it is about the publishing world (sort of). The chemistry between the two of them is what I look for in my characters. I just can't describe it, but it was strong yet understated, and I always cry at the end.
Now let's move on to Angus, thongs and perfect snogging. If you have not seen this movie, you should, it is so funny and will take you back to those days. Remember when you were fifteen and the most important thing was getting that guy to notice you? Well that is what it's about and it does not hurt that the sex-god (Aaron Johnson) really is a sex god(evil blogger is not letting me do pictures).
Love at that age seemed so all encompassing – we definitely had no check list or sensible signals to watch out for. I'll tell you about my obsession with Gurindher Chadha movies another day.
The best thing is; I tell myself I watch these movies over and over again for book research. I love my job.
Xoxo

I watched The Proposal, and really liked it. Sandra Bullock as the editor is so good.
ReplyDeleteBut I have yet to watch The Angus...
I feel so deprived. I have never seen the proposal. Duh!
ReplyDeleteAwwww you little one dancing to your cd!! How lovely!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day!! It's raining outside so maybe it's time to curl up to a lovely romcom film like the Proposal!! Yay! Take care
x
I loved the Proposal. So funny! I should watch it again. I haven't seen the other movie but I'm going to check it out.
ReplyDeleteHappy reunion!
I loved The Proposal! Even though the ending was predictable, the way the story played out felt fresh. And it was so funny.
ReplyDeleteI loved The Proposal, too. Have fun celebrating with hubs :)
ReplyDeleteHi, Joanna. I haven't visited you for a while and decided I'd better come over and see what you're doing. My daughter and I LOVE The Proposal. The scene with the bird and the cell phone is hilarious. And I add my wishes to you for a great celebration.
ReplyDeleteI loved Eats Shoots and Leaves and think it should be required reading in all college English courses.
ReplyDeleteThe Proposal was very good -- and what's not to like about Ryan Reynolds. I do wish the almost ending hadn't been so reminiscent of While You Were Sleeping -- possibly my fave Sandra Bullock movie ever.
we watched the propossal a while back. it was a fun one! i don't get to watch movies too often, i'd love to have a movie night/weekend to just sit and watch one after another! yay for the return of your hubby! christy
ReplyDeleteYou asked how my Dress Up Stay home was going. Better than I thought. Today is Wednesday and I'm waning (not because of DUSH but other situations) however, I will be strong!
ReplyDeleteHi Jo! Nice work if you can get it as they say, hey hey. The Proposal sounds like my kind of movie. I know about it but haven't seen it. Good to hear you're chilling and watching movies and the grubby toddler dance. Have a great time when hubs gets back!
ReplyDeleteDenise<3
I liked The Proposal. I've only seen it once, so I don't particularly remember the chemistry between the two of them. My go-to movie for chemistry is Before Sunset, the one with Ethan Hawken and Julie Delpy. To me, there's something so real about their interactions.
ReplyDeleteHaha, isn't it great to be a writer and be able to do things like that in the name of research!? How cool is that. :) I think I watched The Proposal, very cute. Have a great rest of the week!
ReplyDeleteEthan Hawke, not Hawken. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this cheerie post. Oh I agree, Watching a good film over and over really lets you see all the things you missed the first time around. :O)
ReplyDelete"The Proposal" is one of my favorite movies too! It's cute and fun.
ReplyDeleteYour son sounds like a budding dancer/choreographer! A new routine every day! Look out!
Sadly, i haven't watched The Proposal as i thought it was just another dry humour movie. Though, i like Ryan Reynolds cuz he's cute!!! Anyway, as for the Angus movie, it also sounds nice...and i remember crushing on sitcom actors (i don't know if you remember Orhay, the hispanic dude in Maria De Los Angeles) and daydreaming about the perfect guy in high school.LOL.
ReplyDeleteI love both those movies, too! so yummy. and I liked Eats, Shoots and Leaves a lot. A must read.
ReplyDeleteThe Proposal is one of my favorites. I know what you are talking about with the romance aspect. I'll Netflix the other movie you mentioned.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen The Proposal yet but I WANT to!!! I love both actors!
ReplyDeleteI loved The Proposal too! I'm one of those who can watch a movie over and over if I love it.
ReplyDeleteI loved The Proposal. I thought Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock were great together, but the whole cast is pretty wonderful and each character has their own moment of being funny, Betty White, especially. She's so good.
ReplyDeleteHope your toddler keeps on rocking on to Miranda's tunes - that's too funny how he's got you all bopping. Love it! I play that album a lot too.
Why did you delete our post?

Dear Joanna St. James,
ReplyDeleteWe have realized that you accidentally deleted our previous post. That's fine :):). We decided to give you a liberal time frame of 24 hours to reply to our question as to why you did so. Since you haven't - here it is again!
Cheers! Lol
This is one of the most semantically complicated texts we have ever read. It is indefinitely valuable as an article of post-post modernism. We have closely (as closely as we could) analyzed your work - starting with your blogging on character development vs. Enrique Iglesias. Before expressing our analysis, we must admit to you that this is simply scratching the surface of the complicated nucleus that your writing possesses. Having said this, we would like to extrapolate our opinions and pose a few dynamic questions.
1. We have gathered that you have fallen in love with one of your fictional characters - this is beautiful.
2. He (particular importance paid to the gender of the character) is constructed in a Foucaultian space of power-relations. It is interesting how the very tools of expressing your love at the same time restrict you. Is it the blog or your husband that you love?
3. You have a child with a fictional character. So, by virtue, this creature is a post-modern hybrid. This too is beautiful. In a Donna Haraway-type-of-way. Lol.
4. We have also recognized the fact that your fictional matrimony is bound by reality - which is highly troubling. We know that you are homosexual in so to speak "reality". Openly homosexual in "reality", you are a closeted heterosexual. Albeit this complex fact, you are a closeted homosexual and a closeted heterosexual in your constructed fictional realm of Foucaultian hierarchy. This last point, #4, is saturated with facts. You can refer to #2 in case of rupture.
5. You mentioned Sandra Bullock very briefly, but intentionally. You mentioned her in conjunction with a particular film, which you openly admit to watching over twenty times and crying to it. We find that very, very important for you as an individual.
6. Ultimately, we have discerned that you are in love with Sandra Bullock, but formally interested in Enrique Iglesias. Which is fine, we are too.
Thank you for your work and output on the internet. We would like to ask if it is at all possible to begin our small project based on your theoretical frameworks. It would be very lovely, because being a seamless Latino and a fragment, it is sometimes hard to found roots upon which to grow. We are always looking for the real - an original. The aura, as Benjamin would put it. Your works, in conjunction with photographic documentation of E.I. & J.D. has been that "real".
Thank you.

"I just can't describe it, but it was strong yet understated, and I always cry at the end."
ReplyDeleteThat's it! That's what I'm trying to capture throughout my novel. I hope I can reach that goal...
